7. How Can I Make Linux More Like Windows?
Hmmm. Rebuild the kernel to use every memory-hogging feature you can find. Reboot every couple of days whether you need to or not. And every 18 months or so, send a check for $99 to Bill Gates. That should do the trick.

Truthfully, there really are some things you can do to make Linux more like Windows--at least from the standpoint of ease of use. Primarily, these consist of getting a good X Windows desktop manager and installing graphical utilities that make common tasks easier.

Desktop Managers
The X Windows system has been around for 15 years. It provides the foundation for graphical user interfaces (GUIs) under Linux. Basically, you set up an "X server" on your system so it knows about the capabilities of your graphics card and display. X-based "desktop managers" can then run on the server. These desktop managers provide the graphical interface, and some of them look a lot like Windows.

Though dozens of desktop managers are available, a few have been getting lots of attention recently. The K Desktop Environment (KDE) folks are looking to build a complete set of graphical tools for Unix and Linux. With graphical file management, easily configured menus, and loads of utilities, KDE can be a boon for those who want a graphical interface on their computing.

Free, User-Friendly Software
Some people don't like KDE for philosophical reasons. KDE is built using a commercial GUI toolkit called Qt. Some hard-liners in the freeware Linux community didn't like this, so they set out to create their own environment based entirely on free software. Thus, the GNU Network Object Model Environment (GNOME) was born.

Which you choose will depend on how much you trust free software and which has the utilities you're looking for. But either one will let you make Linux look and feel a lot more like your old home, Windows, without the Microsoft logo.
